University of Maiduguri was founded in 1975 as part of Nigeria¡¯s second wave of ÖйúAƬ institutions.
It was established as the North Eastern College of Arts and Sciences, with 743 students in its first cohort, studying science, social science, law, arts and education.
It now enrols more than 50,000 students across its medical school and faculties of agriculture, arts, dentistry, education, engineering, law, management, pharmacy, science, social science and veterinary medicine.
The Medical School, founded in 1979, opened its first hospital with 300 beds in 1983. The University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) is now, with 1200 beds, among the largest in the country, treating patients not only from the North-East region but across the national borders.
It has its own radio station, Karem FM 97.7
