Thompson Rivers University (TRU) was established in 1970 as a public academic and research university.

The main campus is located in Kamloops, British Columbia and it also has a campus in Williams Lake. In Kamloops, the main campus overlooks the junction of the North Thompson and South Thompson rivers, from which the university gets its name.

Students can study a variety of programmes at the faculty of arts, faculty of adventure, school of business and economics, school of nursing, faculty of education and social work, culinary arts and tourism, faculty of law, faculty of science, faculty of student development, or school of trades and technology.

The university provides 140 on-campus programmes and 60 open learning programmes.

TRU provides its students with opportunities for academic research and extracurricular activities for community services.

Most TRU international students are from China, India and Saudi Arabia, as well as some 70 other countries.

Notable alumni include Canadian actor Lorne Cardinal, Canadian novelist and former professor at the University of British Columbia, Steven Galloway and Kamar Burke, Canadian retired professional basketball player.

The university is in the vicinity of the commercial districts and residential areas, and is next door to Tournament Capital Centre, which is Kamloops' biggest recreational centre. Various outdoor adventures and cultural activities are available on and around its campus.
