Reporter institutions
Universities at the bottom of the table that are listed as having “reporter” status provided data but did not meet our eligibility criteria to receive a rank (more information here).?This year we?gave institutions the option to opt out of being displayed as reporters should they not meet the eligibility criteria.
Editor’s note
December 2022
After the publication of the World University Rankings 2023, 20 institutions that had initially opted out of being displayed as "reporter" institutions informed us they had in fact not intended to opt out. We have?now?added them into the table as reporters (see Reporter institutions section for more information on this status).

October?2022
As part of our THE statement on Ukraine?published on 2 March 2022, we committed to do whatever we could to “protect the interests of Ukraine’s universities at a time of such huge disruption and distress”. We ensured that those that would appear in any of our rankings would have their standing protected in this year’s ranking, regardless of their ability to submit data.
In order to support Ukrainian universities, we have taken the following steps:
- ? For universities that submitted data last year but that were not able to submit data this year, we used last year’s data submission to calculate this year’s ranking.
- ? The ranking positions of all universities that meet our criteria have been processed as normal. However, after this we have considered the positions of Ukrainian universities in light of our published commitment.
- ? For Ukrainian universities that rank lower in the 2023 ranking than in the 2022 ranking we have moved them to the ranking band they were in in last year’s table. We have done this in the same way that we would deal with a data correction – no other university will be demoted as a result of this action. The overall and pillar scores of these Ukrainian universities will not be changed, which can result in a discrepancy between the scores and the ranking.
As published in our?statement on Ukraine, Russian universities have been given less prominence in our rankings. Their names are greyed out in the table (print and online), and their university profiles are not available on the website. This measure covers all Russian and Belarusian universities, as well as V.I. Vernadsky Crimean Federal University (Vernadsky CFU), a Federal Russian University set up in Crimea by Russia.
April 2023
An update to the statistical information for UK universities displayed in the table has been implemented. The number of students has been amended to reflect the HESA Standard Rounding Methodology and is now rounded to the nearest five. This is a display correction only and has no impact on the ranking calculation
