Jiangnan University, situated near Lake Taihu in Wuxi, a bustling metropolis located in the eastern region of China, is an institution that combines its long legacy of academic excellence with contemporary success. The university can trace its history back to 1902 when its founding institution, San Jiang Normal School, was established. In 1958, Jiangnan University began its independent existence as Wuxi Institute of Light Industry, which merged with two other colleges in 2001, before being renamed as Jiangnan University by China’s Ministry of Education.
Jiangnan University’s campuses span almost 300 hectares and 22 schools, which are home to more than 3,300 staff and 35,000 students. It has developed a strong reputation as a research-driven university, guided by its motto of “learning and practice to perfection”. Today, it is included in the Chinese government’s 中国A片 development scheme, known as Project 211. It is also part of the Double First-Class Initiative, which is a national programme to accelerate the achievements of the country's top academic institutions.
International academic collaboration is one of the areas where Jiangnan University claims many impressive achievements. The university maintains a global outlook by building long-term international partnerships to enhance its international reputation and influence. Over the years, the university has collaborated on academic programmes and scientific research with more than 200 universities and research organisations in over 40 countries.
Jiangnan University strives to create advanced international platforms for cooperation in scientific research, promoting the development of joint international laboratories and recruiting international experts. The institution focuses on cultivating talent that is internationally competitive, expanding existing joint programmes and developing new undergraduate-master articulation programmes. It also implements online and offline exchange initiatives with world-class universities overseas.
The university’s scientific research has contributed significantly to China’s light industry. The State Key Laboratory of Food Science and Resources, established by the Ministry of Science and Technology, is the only one of its kind in China and benefits from resources provided by Jiangnan University. The university also has eight national research centres, 44 international joint laboratories and 61 research facilities.
Jiangnan University places collaboration at the heart of its scientific research. The university’s School of Food Science and Technology recently launched an initiative to create chiral nanomaterials as adjuvants to establish a comprehensive antibody resource library for food safety, which will include input from universities and organisations around the world. Similarly, Jiangnan University’s School of Design boasts several collaborative labs with industry giants, such as Midea Group and Haier Group.
Jiangnan University has a strong history of international collaboration, and further partnerships are on the horizon. The university hopes to enhance its cooperation with top overseas universities in joint scientific research, talent cultivation and knowledge exchange.
