The University of Oxford leads the UK for mathematics – both on research quality when GPA is assessed and on research power, as it did in the 2014 exercise; the university entered 172 FTE researchers in this field, and delivered an average score of 3.77.
The University of Cambridge is not far behind, finishing second for both research quality and power, as it did in 2014. It is followed by Imperial College London, the University of Bristol and the University of Glasgow – with the last rising from joint 19th?place back in 2014.
The University of Edinburgh, which submitted jointly with Heriot-Watt University, finished in joint ninth?with its partner institution, up from joint 13th?eight years ago.
At a national level the Mathematical Sciences UoA has a GPA of 3.44, with 48 per cent of its submission rated 4*. 2461.11 FTE staff were submitted to this UoA.
