Plymouth revealed the news about Wendy Purcell, who has led the institution since 2007, in a statement issued on 1 July.

The university’s deputy vice-chancellor, David Coslett, has taken charge “in her absence”.

Plymouth said in the statement: “We can confirm that the vice-chancellor of Plymouth University, Professor Wendy Purcell, has been placed on leave by the university’s board of governors as part of an ongoing review process. As with all internal matters relating to members of staff, we request that the confidentiality of the situation be respected.

“Professor Purcell’s position as vice-chancellor remains unchanged and in her absence the university is being led by deputy vice-chancellor Professor David Coslett.

“As you would expect from a world-ranked university with a strong and distinguished reputation, the executive team will ensure core business continues to be focused on the delivery of a first-class experience for our students. We also continue to work with partners and stakeholders for the benefit and interests of the city and wider region.”

Professor Purcell studied at Plymouth before serving in senior management roles as a pro vice-chancellor at the University of the West of England and deputy vice-chancellor at the University of Hertfordshire.
