Odds and quads

February 4, 2010

This dramatic sculpture by Japanese artist Koichi Ishino, Wind Stone - Earth and Sky, stands next to the Sir Michael Cobham Library on Bournemouth University's Talbot Campus.

A former winner of the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art Award, Ishino was born and studied in Kyoto but went on to earn an international following and has served as artist in residence at the Canberra School of Art.

He works with a unique inlay technique to build metal and stone into what looks like a single surface. His sculptures are notable for the powerful, often disconcerting impact they make through juxtapositions and reflections.

This work is made of stainless steel and black African granite and is 4 m tall.

It was selected by the university from a shortlist of 15, and paid for with a gift from the Fine Family Foundation. It was installed by the sculptor in the summer of 2008.
