Located in the library of the Arts University College at Bournemouth, MoDiP was established in 1988 and formally registered as a museum in 2001.
Although not all of its holdings can be displayed at any one time, it brings together more than 8,000 mainly mass-produced artefacts, such as domestic appliances, fashion accessories, telecommunications devices and packaging materials.
A recent temporary exhibition featured everything from a corkscrew to a toilet brush.
MoDiP forms a unique teaching resource, honed to the needs of the courses taught at the Arts University College, which helps students develop their understanding of consumerism, manufacturing processes, materials and marketing.
A grant from the Joint Information Systems Committee in 2008 has also enabled the museum to create the world's largest and highest-quality digital record of the many and varied uses of plastic in design.
