I WAS surprised to learn that the pro vice chancellor of Middlesex University considers that a university has no control over the employment prospects of its graduates (THES, September 19).
He will find that employers of graduates are attracted to recruit from universities which, in addition to academic learning, provide opportunities for their students to gain work experience, have good careers guidance arrangements and have learning processes that encourage the development of employability skills. All of these are within the control of the university.
He also says that league tables which include first destination information "discriminate against universities in areas of high unemployment". In today's business world, if graduates are not prepared to be mobile then they will probably contribute to the unemployment figures for their area.
