Colin Hempstead of Teesside University's school of human studies is to head a Leverhulme Trust-funded research project on the life of Fleeming Jenkin, a founding father of submarine telegraphy in the mid-19th century. "The telegram was to the 19th century what the fax and email is turning out to be to the last decade of the 20th," says Dr Hempstead who has discovered that two of his grand-daughters are also the great, great, great grand-daughters of Jenkin.
