Good practice in UfI

October 16, 1998

I wish to clarify the position regarding the naming of the Adapt bids recently awarded ("Ban slapped on use of UfI name", THES, October 9).

The volume and quality of response to the call for Adapt bids has been immensely encouraging. There is great scope for collaboration as we build towards roll-out, and the Ufi will facilitate and manage a voluntary system to bring clusters of projects together. We hope this will enable a sharing of good practice and create a dialogue to obtain feedback from projects on the ground and also update projects on policy developments.

The decision not to allow successful projects to use the title "University for Industry" was taken in view of the stage of development of the Ufl model. Arrangements for the third call for Adapt projects in Great Britain, including those relating to project names, were agreed with the national monitoring committee that comprises representatives of key partners in Adapt and the UfI.

The partners in the Sunderland project are doing excellent work in exploring ways of extending learning opportunities in the community and the workplace. There will be much good practice that can be shared.
