Before comprehensives, children were divided by the 11-plus exam, with the "brighter" ones going to grammar schools from which they could continue to university and beyond, while the less able were consigned to secondary moderns with severely limited opportunities for the future. Selection is now creeping back - but on different grounds this time round.
