Dot shots

November 11, 1994

Jane Seaton's piece on Marshall McLuhan ("Speaking Volumes", November 4) struck some 1960s chords. McLuhan did write some wonderful dotty things - including the aphoristic exposition of his "dot" theory of television.

However, he was surely right that electronic technology (not demonic "powerful people") calls the shots in the "global village".

McLuhan made one key mistake. He should have called the "electric age" postmodernity - and scooped intellectual fashionability by some decade and a half.
