The report "Teach-only contract threat" (THES, April 2) is misleading in suggesting that new contracts are being considered to try to influence the research assessment exercise. This issue is largely irrelevant for the next RAE because a minimum percentage of returned staff is unlikely to be a requirement for a top grade.
Loughborough University is considering offering, optionally to some academic staff, alternative contracts that best fit their strengths and aspirations. Far from being a threat, these can relieve the pressure of unrealistic expectations and provide promotion opportunities.
Loughborough AUT is concerned that an internal memo to departmental AUT representatives has been made public in an unhelpful way. We may not always agree, but the university and LAUT enjoy a good working relationship to the benefit of all.
