In his article (THES, December 9) on the conflict between the late Trevor Aston and me Valentine Cunningham says, "Dover confesses to having no visual sense at all". I have never made such a "confession", and nothing in my experience could ever have justified me in making it. This matters, because Dr Cunningham seems to discern, in addition to a clash of character (true enough), a clash of "culture" between Aston and me.
During my years of friendship with Mr Aston, which preceded the much shorter period of conflict, we constantly and strongly agreed on all matters which could be brought under the rubric "culture''.
