(Photograph) - Brushes with Basil: controversial sociologist Basil Bernstein received two Festschrifts, collections of essays on the influence of his ideas at a celebration at the University of Wales, Cardiff. Professor Bernstein proposed that children who can break through school language codes, different from the informal language at home, will be successful in education. Bernstein, who has throat cancer, held the Karl Mannheim chair of the sociology of education at the Institute of Education, London. He is now a professorial fellow at Cardiff.
