CONTRARY to what was stated (THES, February 20), I did not appoint my wife to the post of vice-principal. The board makes appointments at that level. She was also not promoted. Ms Hay holds the same post as when she joined the college, nearly five years ago, when she and I had not met.
Moreover, two colleagues in second-tier posts (termed "vice-principal" in other colleges) were given the title of "vice-principal", not just Ms Hay. Both were also given additional duties and functions following the non-replacement of senior colleagues, but no increase in salary or benefits.
On the same page, David Melville, chief executive of the Further Education Funding Council, stresses the importance of public perceptions of governance and management. The press plays a crucial role in the formation of public perceptions, so journalists have an onerous duty to ensure accuracy and balance. To omit the points noted above might lead the reader to a perception at variance with the facts at Aberdeen College.
