A thinking church

November 11, 1994

Charles Clark (THES, October 28) has a naive view about how the church colleges interpret their task. To examine value questions from a position of commitment does not imply "the dissemination of sectarian ideology" but rather a considered attempt to let students articulate what they personally take seriously. In their teaching, like other university institutions, church colleges are committed to detachment in the sense of permitting and encouraging the examination of all points of view.

They do, however, take the post-post-modern step of asking where this commitment to detachment comes from. It would be interesting to know from what perspectives Goldsmiths College attempts to explore with students the underlying assumptions of the disciplines in which it works.
