Honorary fellowships were awarded to: Marjorie Atkinson, founder member and honorary life president of the Ford and Pennywell Advice Centre, honorary treasurer of Conductive Education North East; Charles Bray, former principal lecturer responsible for ceramics in the faculty of art and design at Sunderland Polytechnic, founder member, secretary/treasurer of British Artists in Glass, fellow of the Society of Glass Technology and the Royal Society of Arts, editor of the Dictionary of Glass; Roland Boyes, former MP for Houghton and Washington, chair of the Northern Group of MPs and of the Tribune Group, honorary fellow of the Master Photographers Association, member of Durham County Cricket Club and former umpire in the county league; Hari Shukla, former director now adviser and consultant to the Tyne and Wear Racial Equality Council, justice of the peace, member of Northumbria Police and Communities Relations Group, the Frankland Prison Board of visitors, governor of Newcastle College and Westgate Community College, chairman of Newcastle University's Hinduism studies project.

Honorary fellowships were conferred on: David Bisbrown, former principal of Hillcrest School and Community College, former chairman of the college's Midlands Region; John Daniel, vice chancellor of the Open University; Beve Hornsby, principal of the Hornsby International Dyslexia Centre; Ludwig Lowenstein, examiner for the college, contributor to Education Today, educational psychologist; Ken Ridley, former dean of teaching, professional and management studies at the College of Ripon and York, St John; Geoff Stanton, former head of the Further Education Unit.
