UNIVERSITY OF WALES COLLEGE OF MEDICINE A personal chair has been awarded to Bryan Williams, reader in the section of rheumatology.

Paul Smith, expert adviser to the International Atomic Energy Agency, has been appointed professor of cancer biology.

Graham Megson, lecturer in the department of computing science at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, professor of computing science; Christine Williams, lecturer in nutrition at the University of Surrey, to the Hugh Sinclair professorship of human nutrition; George Tucker, official teaching fellow in French and director of studies in modern languages at Downing College Cambridge, professor of French studies.

Personal chairs have been conferred on the following: Malcolm Barber, reader in history; James Crabbe, reader in microbiology; Richard Ellis, reader in crop physiology; Christopher Garforth, senior lecturer in agricultural extension and rural development; Michael Garman, reader in psycholinguistics; George Jeronimidis, senior lecturer in engineering; Philip John, reader in plant science; Geoffrey Mitchell, reader in polymer physics; Nancy Nichols, reader in mathematics; Irene Philippaki-Warburton, reader in linguistic science; Geoffrey Sullivan, reader in computer science; Peter Waddington, reader in sociology; Peter Woodward, senior lecturer in politics.

UNIVERSITY OF SUSSEX

Martinus van Gelderen, formerly of Technische Universitat, Berlin, chair in intellectual history; Philip Parsons, University of Reading, chair in organic chemistry from October 1; Judith Harwin, London School of Economics and Political Science, chair in social welfare studies. The following have been promoted to professorships: Terence Clark, physical electronics; Peter Nicholls, English and American literature; Robert Chambers, professorial fellow in the Institute of Development Studies.
