CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES ASSOCIATION. The 1996 Young Person of the Year Award was presented to Kate Mills, a research assistant at Pfizer Limited, who started her working life as a YTS trainee at Zeneca. During her employment there she gained qualifications in science and chemistry; she left Zeneca for full-time study and gained a first-class honours degree in chemistry at the University of Kent, Canterbury. Other finalists include:

Samantha Lavin, engineering technician at Zeneca; Alistair McDougall, graduate process engineer with Albright Wilson UK Ltd; Gary Knight, laboratory technician with Merck Ltd; Murray Thomson, graduate production shift manager with Boots Contract Manufacturing.

INSTITUTE OF ENERGY

The 1995 Redlands Mineral Award has been presented to Paul Williams, Serpil Besler, David Taylor and Richard Bottrill, University of Leeds, for their paper on an energy conservation subject.

AWARD OF EXCELLENCE

The Seventh International Symposium on Supercritical Fluid Chromatography and Extraction held in Indianapolis in April, recognised the achievements of Keith Bartle and the supercritical fluids group in the school of chemistry at the University of Leeds, who were presented with the award of excellence.
