It would be unfair to apply academic standards of criticism to a director of finance's musings, but Philip Harding should be able to write an unambiguous letter (March 11).
Is he unhappy that the article on vice-chancellors' pay fails to ask why Universities UK considers itself the appropriate organisation to defend the disparity in salary progression between groups of employees? Or is it the lack of input from the finance directors' union that causes him such apoplexy?
