Surprises in creative thinking 2

May 10, 2002

As I read your leading article ("Time to address postcode route to information", THES , May 3) condemning the use of postcodes as a means of deciding who should and should not be offered a university place, a warm feeling turned to disbelief as I realised you want to replace one Orwellian vision with another - in which admissions staff use details about the occupational background of an applicant's parents (and other irrelevant, private information) to decide whether to offer a place. Presumably the more humble the claim, the better an applicant's chance of getting a place.
