Points aren't everything

G. Colborne is most likely confused owing to an understandable, but still erroneous, piece of conclusion-jumping (Letters, 23 June).

There are justifiable reasons why many students accepted into English universities have no Universities and Colleges Admissions Service points. For example, very few overseas qualifications attract tariff points, so virtually all applicants from outside the UK will have no tariff score. I'm afraid the fix isn't easy, unless the taxpayer wants to pay more.
