Not current currency

April 22, 2005

It's encouraging to read that our long-abandoned unit of currency, the shilling, lives on in Israel ("Israel agrees on ?38m of funds and new institution", April 15). It's even more encouraging to see that there are now about eight shillings to the pound when, in its heyday, there were 20. So the shilling has appreciated in value more than twofold.

Has any lucky reader kept a stock of the old coins? For the sake of accuracy, the Israel currency unit is the shekel.
