Letter: Media distortion

November 2, 2001

It is a pity that Sally Feldman used her review of the Journal of Media Practice (Books, THES , October 26) to re-visit old scores with some of the contributors rather than address the academic issues.

The nature of practice-based work and the aims of the journal were grossly misrepresented and some correction is necessary. Relations between theory and practice need serious consideration and bring into focus complex questions about relations between representational forms and cultural praxis. There are also important issues centred on relations between institutional policy, funding, the media curriculum and relations with the audiovisual industries that need more perceptive comment than the simple threat that these industries may not be “impressed” by such debate.

A THES review should be required to contribute something of substance to the field.
