A recent letter I received from a Scottish university can perhaps help explain the attitude of university administrators towards PhD external examiners. In the letter, a university official writes: "I am pleased to inform you that approval by the board of study and ratification by the university senate has been granted of your appointment as external examiner for...etc."
As I do not remember applying for this honour, should I feel overwhelmed with joy for this recognition of my talent?
