Learning for life

May 24, 2002

The article on the appointment of Bob Galliers of the London School of Economics at Bentley College near Boston ("US college aims for UK overhaul", THES , May 17) suggests Bentley will "distinguish itself" by doing what everybody else does.

Near Bentley, for example, is Babson College, a long-established "business university". Babson too follows the four-year US approach (general education plus business), not a UK model, that would focus on business studies.

Accredited American programmes in London including ours also follow the US model, referred to in UK nomenclature as "(business specialty) with combined studies". We require general education outside the field of business in the belief that a more broadly educated person will make a better colleague and leader. Life is more than work, and studying humanities and sciences can enrich it beyond their utilitarian value.
