Cavalier attitude

June 20, 2003

Your Whistleblowers report about alleged academic corruption in the journalism department at Liverpool John Moores University ( THES , June 6) was based largely on documents I submitted to an industrial tribunal in 2002.

For an LJMU spokeswoman to say that my claims are "factually inaccurate" is nonsense. My statement was distributed to all parties, and I attended the tribunal to be examined on those allegations. No one - including LJMU's solicitor and Dick Rooney, former head of the journalism department - challenged any part of what I said or wrote, and the tribunal chairman accepted my statement as true.

The issue of standards in the journalism department at LJMU is a matter of legitimate public interest. That it should be dismissed by LJMU as a "playground fight" says much about the university's cavalier attitude to a legitimate inquiry that The THES made about academic standards.

LJMU cannot "categorically refute" my allegations because the forum for doing this has now passed.
