Anti-social science 1

June 14, 2002

Sociologist Harry Collins notes (Books, THES , June 7) that the idea of a "science of society" has been so thoroughly squashed that "post-modernist carpet-baggers roam at will".

On the following page, Ken Roberts, in another review, complains that "the number of UK higher-education students opting for the social sciences has risen while the proportion reading sociology has fallen".

A few of us might suspect a causal connection here, but that seems all too scientific, doesn't it?
