An eye on plagiarism

November 15, 2002

The article "Troubled Wales is hit by plagiarism claim" (News, THES , November 8) conflates and confuses two cases. The first, Jo Kimber's, was a complaint to the University of Wales Swansea that was considered in accordance with that institution's procedures. It was not a matter for the University of Wales. The second case related to a plagiarism allegation that the University of Wales concluded was unfounded. Arising from our investigations, however, we did require Swansea to improve procedures for the referencing of source material.

The Council for Academic Freedom and Academic Standards' claim that, in the University of Wales, "poor academic practice is less reprehensible than the intention to deceive" is unfounded. Cases of either type are of equal concern and are dealt with decisively.
