Wakayama University was founded in 1949 in Wakayama, Japan. The creation of the university came about through the merger of three institutions: Wakayama Normal School, Wakayama Normal School for Youth, and Wakayama Technical School of Economics.
The undergraduate school has four main faculties: education, economics, systems engineering, and tourism. The postgraduate school offers courses in all of these four faculties, the majority of which studying in the school of systems engineering.
The university has agreements with 38 universities in 18 countries around the world, allowing Wakayama’s students to connect with universities globally during and after their studies. These universities come from countries including the United States, Vietnam, China, Turkey, France, the UK and Croatia.
The university has a career support system in place which offers seminars and workshops to help students with career development and find employment. Students are also able to book in individual consultations with the careers advisors.
The international relations division helps international students to settle into the university by offering advice and guidance on living in Japan, supporting Japanese language learning and working with local communities to introduce students to cultural events.
Students can also enjoy Wakayama’s seasonal events throughout the year, many of which celebrate the floral natural culture of Japan. Students can begin by watching the cherry blossom at the beginning of the year, attending the Iwade Summer Festival in late August, and then the autumn leaves falling throughout October. They can come together with others from the city to celebrate Japan in all its glory.
