The University of Akron is one of the largest universities in Ohio. It was established in 1872 by members of the Universalist Church. Its main benefactor was Akron businessman John R Buchtel; the university was originally named after him. In 1907, Akron became non-denominational and in 1967 it became a state university, taking on its current name.
More than 300 degrees are on offer encompassing undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and law courses. The university aims to provide interdisciplinary studies through learning experiences such as internships, research projects and study abroad.
The university’s academic divisions are the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business Administration, the LeBron James Family Foundation College of Education, the College of Engineering, the College of Health Professions, the School of Law, the College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering, the Dr Gary B and Pamela S Williams Honors College, the Graduate School, University College and the College of Applied Science and Technology.
The university is best known for its polymer research. Students can study this at the university’s College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering. In 2010 Akron opened the National Polymer Innovation Center, which features 10 state of the art laboratories. Several major rubber companies have partnerships with the university.
Students have lots of options for recreation, with over 300 different organisations on campus. They include 20 fraternities and sororities and interest clubs ranging from 3D printing to ballroom dance.
