Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) is a public university founded in 1963 on land near the city of Saginaw, Michigan, USA. SVSU is the youngest public university in the state of Michigan. It was incorporated as a private, four-year liberal arts college by the state in 1963. The first graduation ceremony was held in 1966 for a class of 10 students. The college moved to its present campus in 1966. The college was renamed to Saginaw Valley State College in 1974 and in 1980 the university received accreditation to offer master’s degrees. The college became Saginaw Valley State University in 1987 and as SVSU continued to grow and the university opened another site at Cass City in 1991.
Today SVSU has a student body of around 10,000 all studying an array of subjects at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The university offers over 100 academic programs to its students the most popular being teaching, nursing, engineering, business, the health professions, and traditional liberal arts programs. SVSU’s academic programs are split across five colleges: the College of Arts and Behavioural Sciences, the College of Business and Management, the College of Education, the Crystal M. Lange College of Health and Human Services and the College of Science, Engineering and Technology.
The university campus covers nearly 800 acres at University Centre, six miles from downtown Saginaw. The campus is home to the majority of the university’s academic, administrative and residential buildings as well as the Melvin J. Zahnow Library and the Arbury Fine Arts Centre which houses the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum. There are also dining halls and places for students to meet and relax as well as extensive sports and leisure facilities available.
