Even if Richard J. Haier’s research (“Achievement gap can only be closed if we embrace neuroscience”, Opinion, 6 April) uncovers 200 genes that appear unusually active when Jo performs a little algebra, doesn’t Jo always have the personal option of not being turned on by that topic? Limiting the potential of neuroscience, is Jo more than the sum of her genes?
