Odds and quads

This walking stick once belonged to Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951), one of the greatest and most influential philosophers of the 20th century. The handkerchief was used to cover his face after his death. Both were given to the University of Helsinki by Elisabeth von Wright.

She was the widow of Georg Henrik von Wright (1916-2003), a Finn who succeeded Wittgenstein as professor of philosophy at the University of Cambridge and became one of his literary administrators, a leading authority on his work and a major thinker in his own right. Von Wright's typewriter is also shown here.

All form part of the von Wright and Wittgenstein Archives, largely assembled by von Wright himself, which also holds most of the correspondence relating to the publication of Wittgenstein's posthumous works. It is managed by Helsinki's department of philosophy, history, culture and art studies.
