National science photography contest showcases pictures of remarkable projects

A picture of a diamond-coated forest of carbon nanotubes has won the top prize in a organised by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

The image, by Paul May, professor of physical chemistry at the University of Bristol, shows carbon nanotubes around 50,000 times smaller than the width of a human hair. It won the overall prize in the contest, which attracted more than 150 entries and celebrates research funded by the EPSRC.
