INNOVATIVE MANUFACTURING INITIATIVE The first research chairs, jointly funded by the IMI and the Royal Academy of Engineering, have been awarded to the following: Colin Ramshaw, department of chemical and process engineering at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, who will work in the process industries sector; John Turner, University of Southampton, who will work in the land transport sector.

James Hedley, retired principal of Inverness College, has been appointed professor emeritus in recognition of his contribution to strengthening links between the college and the university.

Ben Knights, assistant director of the department of adult and continuing education at the University of Durham, has been appointed professor of English.

The following have been elected to professorships: Robert Bennett, professor at London School of Economics, professor of geography; John Trowsdale, principal scientist ICRF Human Immunogenetics Laboratory, London, professor of immunology; Bill Milne, professor of electrical engineering; Bill Dawes, lecturer in the department of engineering, Francis Mond professorship of aeronautical engineering.
