Truth isn't out there 3

四月 5, 2002

While asserting editorially that "postmodern relativism" helps creationism (Leader, THES , March 22) you also give space to Jonathan Ree saying that dogmatism about science hampers those who oppose creationism.

Karl Popper, no postmodernist, also rejected dogmatism. Human fallibility makes our theories unprovable, but nothing forces us to recognise fallibility, so nothing stops us pretending to infallibility. It is easy to portray the world as full of "proofs" of what we want to believe and "disproofs" of what those we want to label our "enemies" believe. Creationists make use of the still-current misidentification of science with proven truth to subvert science and truth.
