Student selection and choice 2

八月 22, 2003

Psychology must not be dragged down the road of media studies by detractors of vocational choice. According to the latest What Graduates do? report, 64.7 per cent of psychology graduates are employed six months after graduation compared with 67.7 per cent of all graduates, but 20.9 per cent go on to further study compared with 18.4 per cent of all graduates. A third of psychology graduates employed six months after graduation are in social science professions, including health and childcare (11.8 per cent), welfare, community and youth workers (6.2 per cent), clinical psychologists (2.5 per cent), and social workers (1.5 per cent). All highly valued and much needed occupations.

Psychology is popular among women. As a profession, psychology offers them stimulation, challenge, the prospect of giving something back to society, good salaries and the flexibility essential for work-life balance.
