Geeks bearing election gifts

五月 6, 2010

I enjoyed your feature on the online campaign for the "geek vote" ("'Geek the vote' and the Battle of Bosworth", 22 April), but wanted to clarify the various sub-campaigns running via blogs and Twitter hashtags.

Geek the Vote (#geekthevote) is an unofficial campaign promoting the Liberal Democrats as the party with the strongest case for building a geek-friendly Britain. We have a site focusing on its manifesto policies relating to science, technology, education, libel reform and the repeal of the Digital Economy Act.

The Science Vote campaign, organised by the Campaign for Science and Engineering (#scivote), is a non-partisan campaign that examines all the party manifestos and has invited party leaders to give a personal account of their commitment to science.

Finally, the Vote Geek campaign, run by Alan Bell (#votegeek), is also non-partisan, but focuses on individual parliamentary candidates rather than party policies as a whole.

We are delighted that engagement with all these campaigns is raising the profile of science funding, academic freedom and independent expert advice as important election issues.
