I am disappointed with Colwyn Williamson's comments about Swansea Institute (Letters, THES , September 20). If I had tape-recorded, with his knowledge, the many telephone conversations that we had about the student in question, the credibility of the Council for Academic Freedom and Standards as the "scourge of university managers" would be sadly dented.
Personally, I always found Mr Williamson pleasant and willing to find a way to solve the tricky problems involved. Perhaps he has forgotten this or perhaps he doesn't want to remember.
